Style Council: Ten Meets Edda Gudmundsdottir

Dressing the world’s biggest musicians is no small feat, yet the stylists featured inside 10 Magazine Issue 04 make crafting superstar fashion perfection look like light work.

Edda Gudmundsdottir, fashion stylist and costume designer

As Björk’s go-to collaborator, Gudmundsdottir sits at the creative forefront of fashion and music. With daring, dreamscape looks, she brings an otherworldly wonder to the party.

Who are some of the clients you work with?

Some of my most recent collaborators are Björk, directors Joseph Kahn and Vidar Logi, designers Jake Scott, Daniel Del Core and Pauline Dujancourt, musicians Kelly Lee Owens and John Grant and the Rambert Ballet.

What place does fashion have in music today?

I see fashion as a visual extension of the musician’s identity and sound. The relationship between fashion and music has always been intertwined. In today’s world, the connection has evolved into becoming an even bigger part of the way the artist presents themselves and enhances their musical identity and branding.

How do you work with an artist to build their image?

First and foremost by listening closely to what their vision is and then helping them to achieve and refine that and keep it consistent across all platforms.

What’s been your proudest image-making moment with an artist?

Sounding like a mother, I will say I am proud of all my children. But if I had to single out one in particular it would have to be Björk’s Cornucopia concerts [which ran from 2019 to 2023]. Helping Björk and James Merry [who makes masks and headpieces] shape her vision and the world she imagined for Cornucopia, and refining it over five years of touring, has been incredibly rewarding.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

Good collaborations. Seeing the dreams, vision and hard work of a team come together.

What’s the toughest thing about your job?

Making impossible deadlines and budgets work to the clients’ and my own satisfaction.

What’s your favourite getting-ready track?

It varies based on what I am getting ready for. Anything from classical music to techno. But when things are on deadline it’s RuPaul’s Supermodel (You Better Work).

What fashion item gives you the ick?

The fashion police’s superior attitude. I can work with everything else [by] turning “hell no” into “hell yes” with some tlc.

How do you measure success?

Being fortunate enough to earn a living doing what one loves to do.

Tour looks or red carpet dressing – which do you prefer?

Tour looks for sure. Getting to tell a story with the wardrobe and figuring out all the technical aspects of what needs to happen so the performer can perform.

Tell us a tour bus anecdote.

A real lady doesn’t kiss and tell, plus I prefer flying over bus.

How do you deal with superstar demands?

With a smile.

If you were in a band, how would you style yourself?
